How It Works: Electrolysis is the process of inserting a thin needle into the base of the hair follicle. An electric current is then senth throughout the hair follicle, and into the follicle root. This procedure doesn’t just remove the hair fibers, but it also destroys the root of the hair, which means that it oftens permanently prevents it from every growing more hair. The follicle of each hair must be individually treated, over the duration of several treatment appointments. Large areas, like the bikini line can take anything where 7 to 15 hours, while a smaller area, like that of the upper like may take 4 to 10 hours.
How Long It Lasts: Although some people have regrowth of hair, with sufficient treatments, it often is a permanent hair removal solution.
Pros: Permanent hair removal technique, that can be used on all skin types and hair colors. This method is not affected by the pigment in the hair. Electrolysis has been approved by the FDA as a permanent removal method. Electrolysis is very effective for removal of fine facial hair. It can be done at home, but is not as safe as having it done professionally.
Cons: Electrolysis is a lengthy process. Treating a small area, like the eyebrows, takes about 30 minutes. Electrolysis is usually only done on smaller areas like on the upper lip, eyebrows, and sometimes underarms. If hair follicles have been bent or damaged from previous tweezing and waxing, it can make it difficult for the needle to be inserted into the hair follicle, and to destroy the root. Most people report electrolysis as having a stinging or prickling sensation, but some say it is painful and can dry the skin. It can also cause inflamation and if the instruments are not properly sterilized, it can cause infection.
Tips: It helps to shave about 3 days before an electrolysis treatment. This helps get the hairs in the anagen phase, and make them more visible.
